Donald Trump has left the G-7 Summit early, leaving meetings with foreign leaders in a state of tension and chaos.
The summit was doomed from the start as Trump got off on the wrong foot and his incompetence ensured that he stayed there. Trump began the summit by calling for Russia to be invited back into the group of world leaders yesterday, much to the disgust of many. Things did not improve today as Trump crashed the breakfast for gender equality, arriving late and causing a scene as the other world leaders tried to hide their annoyance. The icing on the cake came shortly after, when Trump engaged in a bitter argument over trade tariffs.
In what is being called an “extraordinary” exchange, Trump fought with world leaders from Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan and whined about how unfairly the United States was being treated, particularly by the EU and Canada. A French presidency official said:
“And so began a long litany of recriminations, somewhat bitter reports that the United States was treated unfairly, that the trading system was totally unfavorable to the United States, the American economy, American workers, the middle class.
In short, a long, frank rant which is undoubtedly very unusual in this kind of formats.”
Trump’s little temper tantrum caused French President Emmanuel Macron to put Trump back in his place and respond in a “courteous but very firm tone” to make a counterpoint for the European side. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also added his remarks.
As Trump is leaving the summit early and skipping discussions about climate change and the health of oceans, Trump’s departure and last words will surely leave a bad impression on the other world leaders. We all knew that Trump wasn’t capable of succeeding at this summit, but he has performed far worse than even our lowest expectations.
